Project COSMOS: Lürssen’s Groundbreaking Superyacht with Fuel Cell Technology

The revolutionary 114m (374ft) superyacht, known as Project Cosmos or Project 13759, has achieved a significant technical milestone with its launch from Lürssen’s facility in Rendsburg, Germany. This vessel is the pioneering first to incorporate fuel cell technology onboard, marking a remarkable leap towards reduced environmental impact and a substantial decrease in carbon footprint.

Lürssen has been at the forefront of innovation for years, engaging in research initiatives focused on integrating fuel cells into ships since 2009. The development of a modular fuel cell system utilizing methanol has been underway since 2012.

Project COSMOS, a 114.2m motor yacht, is in construction by Lurssen in Germany, set for delivery in 2024. With an impressive gross tonnage of 6,999 GT and an 18.0m beam, this megayacht is poised to offer luxurious grandeur coupled with pioneering fuel cell technology.

Designed by Marc Newson, both the exterior and interior reflect his aesthetic sensibilities. The interior boasts a two-level glass atrium and can accommodate up to 18 guests and a crew of over 36. Remarkable features include an expansive pool, an observation pod, and a helicopter landing pad.

Powered by MTU 16V4000 diesel engines, the COSMOS commands a cruising speed of approximately 14 knots and an estimated top speed exceeding 20 knots. The yacht’s value is rumored to have surpassed $350 million, reflecting the extraordinary luxury and cutting-edge technology it embodies.

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa is the visionary owner behind Project COSMOS. As the founder of Start Today and the Tokyo-based Contemporary Art Foundation, he brings a unique perspective to the project.

Project COSMOS serves as an iconic vessel that fuses opulence with innovation. Its launch signifies Lürssen’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of technology within the yachting industry. The megayacht is expected to embark on its maiden voyage in 2025, showcasing the promise of fuel cell technology in maritime exploration.

The unveiling of Project COSMOS represents a remarkable leap forward in both luxury and sustainability. This megayacht, born from the visionary collaboration between Lürssen and designer Marc Newson, embodies a new era of maritime innovation.

With a displacement of 6,300 tons and propelled by MTU 16V4000 diesel engines, the COSMOS effortlessly cruises at 14 knots and boasts a potential top speed exceeding 20 knots. Its sleek exterior, designed by Marc Newson, reflects a bold explorer-style profile, with a superstructure artfully positioned forward to create an expansive aft deck complete with a swimming pool, promising endless hours of relaxation and enjoyment.

As the first superyacht to feature fuel cell technology, the COSMOS transcends traditional luxury by significantly minimizing its environmental impact. The innovative fuel cell system ensures efficient and emission-free operation, reflecting Lürssen’s commitment to sustainable yachting. The vessel’s launch marks a significant achievement in the ongoing quest to reduce the yachting industry’s carbon footprint and promote eco-conscious exploration.

The waste result is still just water, offering a viable zero-emissions solution at sea that Lürssen hopes will influence future megayacht builds, especially since some of the traditional ultra-large vessels have larger carbon footprints that entire island nations.

Hydrogen power clearly offers a better solution, especially since Lürssen Yachts states the Project Cosmos’ green propulsion system enables its owner to anchor down for 15 nights without emissions. In terms of range at sea, the megayacht will be able to slow cruise for over 1,000 miles, again emissions-free.

Beyond its cutting-edge propulsion, the COSMOS indulges its guests with opulent interiors, curated by designer Marc Newson. While specific details remain shrouded in secrecy, tantalizing glimpses of a two-level glass atrium and accommodations for 18 guests along with a crew of over 36 have created anticipation for an unmatched onboard experience.

The COSMOS project is a testament to the synergy between visionary design and technological innovation. It demonstrates that luxury and sustainability need not be mutually exclusive, showcasing the potential for a greener future in the world of superyachts. As the vessel progresses towards its anticipated completion in 2025, the yachting community eagerly awaits its maiden voyage, a voyage that will not only redefine luxury but also set a new standard for environmentally responsible exploration.
